AZAL flight crash
On December 25, 2024, a passenger Embraer 190 operated by Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), flying from Baku to Grozny, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. There were 67 people on board, 38 of whom died.
Later, Azerbaijan officially confirmed that the cause of the crash was a Russian missile. At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin initially limited himself to apologizing to President Ilham Aliyev for the tragic incident, without acknowledging Russia’s direct responsibility.
Only in September 2025, during a meeting with Azerbaijan’s President, Putin effectively admitted that the aircraft had been struck by Russian air defense systems.
According to him, two missiles launched by Russia’s air defense system exploded just a few meters from the plane.
