Russian forces attempted to breach the border in the direction of the village of Dehtiarne in the Kharkiv region. Ukraine's Defense Forces repelled the attack and killed more than 20 Russian troops, State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko said.
"This (the attack – ed.) took place in the direction of the settlement of Dehtiarne. Previously, the enemy had appeared in small groups near the border, apparently probing the situation. But at the beginning of this week, over the course of several days, after accumulating certain forces, they attempted to attack the positions of border units in small infantry groups but in greater numbers," Demchenko said.
According to him, while repelling the attack, Ukrainian defenders killed 21 Russian troops, while another 11 were wounded.

The spokesperson noted that attempts are currently being recorded by Russian forces to expand the combat zone to neighboring settlements, including Kruhle and Buhrivatka.
"The enemy does not abandon attempts to breach the state border and expand the combat zone on Ukrainian territory, but thanks to the resilience and courage of every Ukrainian soldier and border guard, the enemy has not been able to achieve results in this direction," Demchenko added.
He also said that no enemy activity has been observed near the border village of Sotnytskyi Kozachok in the Kharkiv region.
At the same time, on the previous day, Russian forces attempted to assault the positions of border units in the direction of the settlement of Vovchanski Khutory but suffered losses and failed to make any advance.
Fighting in the Kharkiv region
Russian forces have recently intensified activity in the Kharkiv region. On January 15, the 13th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine Khartiia reported that it had repelled an assault attempt by Russian forces in the direction of Lyptsi, killing approximately 70 Russian troops.
Also, yesterday in the Kharkiv region, units of the State Border Guard Service repelled a number of Russian attacks in border areas and killed more than 20 Russian troops.
The Joint Forces grouping also reported on January 13 that the Russian army had intensified assault attacks in the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction. Measures are being taken there to prevent a deterioration of the tactical situation.
