A strike drone that attacked a British base in Cyprus in early March contained a Russian-made navigation system, according to The Times.

According to the publication, the kamikaze drone that struck a British air base in Cyprus was equipped with Russian components.

The drone attacked the Akrotiri airbase on Sunday, March 1. It reportedly contained the Russian-made Kometa-B navigation system, which was first identified in drones intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses in December last year.

British military intelligence has sent the recovered components to a laboratory in the United Kingdom for further investigation. The attack is believed to have been carried out by Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

This discovery is the first evidence of Russian military technology being used in the Iranian conflict and raises concerns about Moscow’s growing involvement in the war in the Middle East.

Attacks on Cyprus

As a reminder, on March 1, Iran launched two ballistic missiles toward Cyprus, where British military bases are located. Both missiles either fell into the Mediterranean Sea or were intercepted before reaching the island.

Explosions were also heard across Cyprus on the night of March 2. Local residents reported hearing blasts near the airbase, while air raid sirens were sounding.

Later, media reports suggested that one of the explosions was linked to a strike by a drone of Iranian origin. No casualties were reported.
