Russia unable to regain lost areas in Kursk region despite reinforcements - Financial Times
Russia failed to push back Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region, despite sending reinforcements. As of 11 August, the invasion has been going on for six days, the Financial Times reports.
According to verified videos and photos, since the start of the operation on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces and their equipment have advanced 30 km into Russia. In particular, the troops have taken the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region, not far from the Russian border.
Ukrainian soldier Denys, who had completed three rotations on Russian territory since the start of the invasion, tells the FT that they are going deeper.
He says the Ukrainian Armed Forces still have the upper hand, even though Russia had sent in reinforcements.
Another soldier, Kostiantyn, says the early success of the surprise operation really lifted their spirits.
What Ukrainian officials are saying
According to the FT, on Saturday evening, 10 August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy broke a five-day silence to make his first public mention of the invasion of Russian territory by Ukrainian troops. He said that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, had reported to him on the situation at the front and Ukrainian actions to bring the war to the aggressor's territory.
A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense tells the FT that details of the operation have not yet been disclosed, as they are waiting to see how things develop.
Kursk breakthrough
On Tuesday, 6 August, the Russians announced a border breakthrough from Ukraine in the Kursk region. The fighting in the border areas of the Russian region has been going on for six days. Russian propagandists complain about the advance of Ukrainian troops deep into the territory of Russia, namely in the Kursk region.
Against this backdrop, a counter-terrorist operation regime has recently been introduced in the Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod regions.
In addition, today, 11 August, Russia recognized a breakthrough in another district of the Kursk region. In particular, the acting governor of the region, Aleksey Smirnov, said that on 10 August, a Ukrainian subversive group had entered the territory of the Belovsk district. At the same time, he claims that as of the time of his statement, there was no fighting in the Bilovsk and Oboyansky districts of the Kursk region.
