Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of April 17

Ukrainian soldiers are holding positions on the left bank of the Dnipro River, repelling attacks by occupiers near Vodyane in the Donetsk region, while Russian forces attempted to improve their position near the town of Chasiv Yar, according to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling of Ukraine
During the day, 71 combat clashes were recorded. In total, the enemy delivered 4 rocket and 43 aviation strikes, carried out 43 bombardments from reactive volley fire systems on the positions of our troops and civilian areas.
As a result of Russian terrorist attacks, unfortunately, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Multi-storey and private houses, as well as other infrastructure objects, suffered destruction and damage.
In the morning, the enemy struck Chernihiv city with rockets. According to preliminary data, as a result of the attack, 17 people were killed, over 60 people were injured, including 2 children, and 3 people were rescued from under the rubble. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Situation at frontlines
In the Volyn and Polissia direction, the operational situation remains unchanged, with no significant changes observed in the formation of enemy offensive groupings.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske direction, the enemy maintains military presence in border areas, conducts sabotage-reconnaissance activities, fires on populated areas from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border of Ukraine.
Over 15 populated areas, including Klusy, Yeline, Leonivka in the Chernihiv region, and Sydorivka, Bila Bereza, and Bilopillya in the Sumy region, were shelled by enemy artillery and mortar fire.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attacked our positions near the village of Novoserhiivka in the Kharkiv region four times. Approximately 20 populated areas, including Synkivka, Petropavlivka, and Kyslivka in the Kharkiv region, came under artillery and mortar fire.
In the Lyman direction, Defense Forces repelled three attacks in the areas of Nevske in the Luhansk region and Terny in the Donetsk region. Over 10 populated areas, including Makiivka in the Luhansk region, Yampolivka, Torske, and Zarychne in the Donetsk region, were affected by artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Bakhmut direction, our troops repelled 19 attacks in the areas of Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, Vyiimka, Rozdolivka, Chasiv Yar, Novyi, and Klishchiivka in the Donetsk region, where the enemy, with aviation support, attempted to improve tactical positions.
The enemy carried out an airstrike in the areas of Verkhniokamyanske, Ivanodariivka, Spirne, and Diliivka in the Donetsk region. Over 10 populated areas, including Hryhorivka, Kalynivka, and Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders repelled nine attacks in the areas of Semenivka, Novobakhmutivka, Ocheretyne, Novokalynove, and Pervomaiske in the Donetsk region, where the enemy, with aviation support, attempted to dislodge our units from occupied positions.
The enemy also conducted airstrikes in the areas of Pervomaiske, Soloviove, Novokalynove, Novopokrovskoe, Novoselivka Persha, Novobakhmutivka, Sokil, and Oleksandrivka in the Donetsk region. Approximately 15 populated areas, including Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, and Netailove in the Donetsk region, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Defense Forces continue to restrain the enemy in the areas of Vodyane, Pobeda, and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region, where the enemy, with aviation support, attempted to breach our troops' defense 15 times. The enemy also conducted airstrikes in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, and Urozhainoe in the Donetsk region.
Over 10 populated areas, including Paraskoviivka, Kostiantynivka, and Vuhledar in the Donetsk region, came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy attacked our defenders' positions in the areas of Staromayorske in the Donetsk region three times, with aviation support. The enemy carried out an airstrike in the area of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. Approximately 20 populated areas, including Malynivka, Chervone, Bilohiria, and Shcherbaky in the Zaporizhzhia region, were subjected to enemy artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Kherson direction, approximately 20 populated areas, including Beryslav, Tokarivka, Tyahynka, Olhivka, Ponyativka, Inzhenerne, and Vesele in the Kherson region, came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Situation on the left bank of the Dnipro River
The enemy persists in its intention to displace our units from the footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro River.
Indeed, during the day, with aviation support, the enemy carried out two unsuccessful attacks on the positions of our forces in the area of the settlement of Krynky, the Kherson region.
Russian losses
During the day, the Defense Forces aviation struck 8 areas where enemy personnel were concentrated.
It is worth noting that the total number of losses in the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion amounts to 456,050 military personnel.
