The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomed the adoption by the UN General Assembly of a resolution initiated by Ukraine on strengthening international cooperation to overcome the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The document emphasizes that the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant belongs to Ukraine and establishes the correct Ukrainian transliteration of the entire Chornobyl dossier within the UN structure.

The resolution was supported by 97 member states. The Foreign Ministry noted that the adoption of the document is an important step in restoring historical justice and recognizing the threats to global nuclear security posed by Russia as an aggressor state.

The ministry separately emphasized that Russia tried to avoid responsibility for its actions at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and push through an alternative document in the General Assembly. The draft, submitted by its ally, the Republic of Belarus, did not contain any mention of the Russian Federation's attacks on the Chornobyl plant.

“In an attempt to avoid responsibility for its crimes, the Russian Federation tried to get the UN General Assembly to adopt an alternative document submitted by its satellite, the Republic of Belarus, without any mention of Russia's attacks on the Chornobyl NPP facilities. We are grateful to the UN member states that once again demonstrated their principled position and rejected the relevant draft resolution of the Republic of Belarus,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Blackout at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant

In October, the Russian army damaged an energy infrastructure facility in the Kyiv region with strike drones. As a result of the strike, electricity was completely cut off in the city of Slavutych and several districts of the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions.

There was a blackout at the facilities of the State Specialized Enterprise Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the nuclear power plant was without power for three hours and called the Russian strike deliberate.

On February 14, a drone equipped with a high-explosive warhead hit the sarcophagus at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. According to the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the consequences of the attack could have been catastrophic if the drone had hit 15 meters to the side of the target.
