Russian troops attacked rescuers in the Sumy region today, August 22, resulting in a fire, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

"As a result of Russian strikes on the Znob-Novhorodske community, the fire and rescue unit was damaged. In addition, a large-scale fire broke out in the residential sector," rescuers said.

Fortunately, neither residents nor rescuers were injured.

"Currently, all sources of fire are being extinguished. At the same time, emergency restoration work has begun in people's homes," the State Emergency Service added.

Russian strikes on Sumy and region

Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops have been striking Sumy and the region with artillery, drones, and missiles.

For example, a Russian drone attacked the central market in Sumy on the evening of August 15. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that they allegedly did not attack Sumy and other Ukrainian cities.

Russia also recently attacked Sumy State University. As a result of rocket and drone strikes, one of the buildings was destroyed and another was damaged. Residential buildings in the city were also damaged—windows were blown out and balcony frames were destroyed in two five-story buildings.

In addition, on August 10, a Russian drone struck the Sumy Regional State Administration. As a result of the Russian attack, the administrative building was damaged.
