Russia attacked Sumy again, targeting Sumy State University. As a result of Russian rocket and drone strikes, one of the buildings was destroyed and another was damaged, according to the local news agency Kordon.Media.

On the evening of August 17, the Russian army launched a missile strike on Sumy. As a result of the Russian attack, the main building of Sumy State University was damaged. On the night of August 18, Russia launched a new strike, this time with 4 suicide drones. One of the university buildings was destroyed.

University employees are now trying to salvage what remains after the Russian strikes. Together with rescuers, they are removing surviving furniture and equipment from the premises.

Residential buildings in the city were also damaged — windows were blown out and balcony frames were destroyed in two five-story buildings.

For residents whose homes were damaged by the Russian strikes, a mobile headquarters has been set up in the courtyard of buildings at 4 and 8 Mykoly Sumtsova Street. It will operate until 5 p.m.

Russian attacks on Sumy State University

This is not the first time Russia has shelled Sumy State University. In particular, on September 3, 2024, the academic building was already hit. And on April 13 this year, the Russians attacked Sumy with 2 ballistic missiles, killing 35 people and damaging the university building and the congress center.

On August 15, Russians struck a market in the center of Sumy with a drone. The Russian attack on a civilian facility caused a fire. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that they allegedly did not carry out strikes on Sumy or other Ukrainian cities. And, as usual, they cynically accused Ukraine of provocation, linking it to the upcoming meeting between Putin and Trump.
