Russia strikes Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, film studio and residential buildings: Aftermath revealed

On the night of June 15, Russia launched a combined strike on Kyiv. As a result, buildings and historical landmarks in the capital were damaged, and there were casualties.

What Russians attacked with
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia attempted to send drones toward Kyiv as early as the evening of June 14. After midnight, the number of drones increased, so they began reaching the capital, and the sounds of air defense systems and explosions could be heard in the city.
After 1 a.m. Kyiv time, Russia actively struck Ukraine's capital with ballistic missiles. The attack lasted about two hours, with brief pauses. Monitoring channels speculated that some of these missiles were Zircons launched from occupied Crimea.

In addition, the Russians deployed Tu-95MS/Tu-160 strategic bombers into the night sky. Later, Russia carried out launch maneuvers, and at approximately 2:50 a.m., cruise missiles reached Ukraine and were heading toward Kyiv.
The Ukrainian Air Force estimates that Russia launched over 680 targets at Ukraine overnight, specifically 70 missiles and 611 drones.
The main target of the Russian attack was Kyiv. Dnipro and Kharkiv were also attacked by missiles. Ukrainian air defense forces shot down or neutralized 632 targets, 50 missiles, and 582 drones:
- 5 out of 6 3M22 Zircon anti-ship missiles
- 15 out of 34 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles
- 30 out of 30 Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles
- 582 out of 611 drones.
There were hits by 20 ballistic missiles and 27 attack drones at 42 locations, as well as the fall of downed (debris) UAVs at 12 locations.
Russian strike consequences
Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Tymur Tkachenko stated that the Russians deliberately attacked the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra today. A direct hit caused a fire, and significant damage was recorded.
Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy Tetiana Berezhna clarified that Russia damaged the Assumption Cathedral.
At the same time, Archbishop Avraamii reported that following the Russian attack, an emergency evacuation of sacred relics and liturgical items was organized at the Lavra. Specifically, this included ancient icons, antiminsia, and other valuables.
"Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Lavra’s monastic community, all those involved, as well as the selfless work of rescue workers and fire departments, we managed to minimize the threat to people and preserve the sacred objects," the Archbishop adds.

The grounds of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra have been temporarily closed to visitors following a Russian attack.
A Shahed drone struck the altar area of the Assumption Cathedral, specifically, the St. Stephen's Chapel. Firefighters are currently extinguishing the fire. In addition, a second strike damaged the John Kushnik Tower, a 17th-18th century defensive structure.
The head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine, has already responded to the Russian strike, calling it yet another Russian crime against humanity.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine is initiating procedures within UNESCO regarding the shelling of the Lavra, demanding an immediate and adequate response to this state barbarism.
Dovzhenko Film Studio
In the morning, Tetiana Berezhna confirmed that the Russians had attacked the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio overnight. It is one of the oldest film studios in Ukraine.
"A fire broke out. The costume workshop was damaged by a direct hit. Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection has been destroyed. The studio housed about 100,000 costumes and three million pieces of clothing. Other buildings and structures at the film studio were also damaged," she adds.
Currently, rescue and emergency services are working at the site of the Russian strike, and efforts are underway to address the aftermath of the attack and ensure safety.

High Anti-Corruption Court
The High Anti-Corruption Court in the center of the capital has also been damaged.
The building is located at 41 Beresteiskyi Avenue. The windows there have been shattered. However, the court notes that despite this, all hearings will proceed as scheduled.

Nova Poshta post terminal
During the massive Russian attack on Kyiv, Nova Poshta lost its most modern terminal. It was the first facility in Ukraine to be equipped with automated parcel-processing equipment.

Mystetskyi Arsenal

Other consequences
Tymur Tkachenko reported that as of 4:40 a.m., over 40 locations in Kyiv had sustained significant damage. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported that in the northern part of the capital, 140,000 residents were left without power due to the Russian attack.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has also assessed the initial consequences of the Russian strike and stated that damage has been recorded in 10 districts, namely: Obolonskyi, Podilskyi, Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Dniprovskyi, Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi.

As of 5:47 a.m., according to Klitschko, damage has occurred in nearly every district of the city. Emergency services are currently operating at approximately 50 locations.
As of 8:50 a.m., the number of casualties rose to 30, including two children aged 5 and 6, according to the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.
As of 10:20 a.m., one of the casualties, who was in critical condition, died in the hospital. This brings the death toll in the capital to 5.
Zelenskyy's response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responds to Russia's massive attack and calls on partners to increase pressure on Russia and provide Ukraine with more air defense capabilities, particularly anti-ballistic systems.

Zelenskyy also calls the strike on the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra one of Russia’s gravest crimes against Christian culture and emphasizes that the attacks on Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and other regions demonstrate Russia’s intent to continue the war.
"It is very important that there be a response from the G7 countries, which are now gathering for their summit – and that this response be decisive and substantive," Zelenskyy wrote.
Obolonskyi district
In the Obolonskyi district, 30 cars caught fire as a result of the Russian strikes; fires broke out in warehouse facilities, and damage to residential buildings, including shattered windows and doors, was reported. Specifically, a fire broke out and destroyed the 3rd and 4th floors of one of the apartment buildings, and a strike was recorded on a 9-story residential building, followed by a second strike.

"A fire broke out on the roof of one of the capital’s churches, covering an area of 800 square meters," adds the rescue workers (referring to the Lavra).
Solomianskyi district
Russia struck a nine-story residential building, causing fires on the 5th and 6th floors.
Holosiivskyi district
According to rescue workers, fires broke out in a warehouse building in the Holosiivskyi district, and a strike on a critical infrastructure facility was also recorded.
Shevchenkivskyi district
Russia struck a non-residential building, residential buildings, and commercial facilities.
"Three people were rescued from a 25-story residential building; another person was freed from an elevator and handed over to medics with burns. The fire has been contained," the post states.
Dniprovskyi district
Russia damaged a private residential building.
Desnianskyi district
According to rescue workers, a fire broke out on the grounds of an educational institution.
Darnitskyi district
Debris fell, causing a subsequent fire.
Sviatoshynskyi district
Here, residential buildings were damaged by a Russian attack, but no subsequent fire occurred.
Casualties
According to the latest data, there are currently 23 casualties in Kyiv. Among them are a pregnant woman and a 5-year-old child. Some of the victims have been hospitalized.
As of 5:44 a.m., in addition to the 23 casualties, 4 people have died in Kyiv.
Russian strike on Ukraine
Previously, Russia attacked Ukraine on the night of June 2. At that time, Russia also attacked several cities with drones and ballistic missiles, but Kyiv was the main target.
