Russian missile strike on Sumy

As reported earlier, Russian forces launched two ballistic missile strikes on the city of Sumy on April 13. The city center was hit, an area crowded with people at the time. Many were walking down the street, sitting in their cars, or riding public transportation.

Initially, authorities reported 21 killed and 20 wounded. That number later rose to 34, then to 83. At present, the city center remains cordoned off. Police, rescue teams, and medics are working at the scene. Extensive destruction has been recorded.

The highest number of casualties occurred in a trolleybus that happened to be near the epicenter of one of the strikes. Almost everyone on board was killed.

According to local officials, Russia used the same tactic in today’s attack as it did in a recent strike on Kryvyi Rih. They say the missile carried cluster munitions and detonated in the air over the city.

Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, told RBC-Ukraine in an exclusive comment that two ballistic strikes were launched on Sumy.

All known consequences of the missile strike on Sumy are detailed in RBC-Ukraine’s report.

On March 24, Russian forces launched a missile strike on downtown Sumy. The strike damaged several apartment buildings and a school. More than 100 people were injured. A total of 108 were reported wounded in that attack.
