Explosive ordnance experts in Kyiv have safely neutralized the warhead of an Iskander-M missile that failed to detonate during a Russian attack on the capital overnight, the National Police of Ukraine reports.
The missile fragments, containing a warhead weighing roughly 500 kilograms, were found near residential buildings and a gas station in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district, creating a high risk of detonation and civilian casualties.
"The ordnance was in close proximity to residential areas and infrastructure, posing a serious threat to people," the National Police said.
Police explosive ordnance experts and State Emergency Service miners were deployed to handle the device. Specialists rendered the warhead safe and then removed it using specialized equipment for disposal at a secure training range.
"All operations were conducted with maximum safety precautions," police authorities added.

January 24 attack on Kyiv
In the early hours of January 24, Russian forces launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Kyiv, causing widespread damage across the city.
Authorities reported damage and destruction to both residential and non-residential buildings across five districts. So far, one person has been killed and at least four others injured.
City utilities and energy teams are working to restore electricity, heating, and water following the overnight attacks by Russia on critical infrastructure.
The hardest-hit area is Kyiv's Troieshchyna, where roughly 600 residential buildings remain without power, heat, or water.
Additional warming centers have been set up across the city for residents.
Following previous attacks, a state of emergency has been declared in Ukraine's energy sector. In Kyiv, emergency power outages have been ongoing for over a week, with regular schedules suspended.
