Russia is massively deploying air defense systems to the Moscow oil refinery following successful Ukrainian drone strikes, according to Defense Express.

To protect the Moscow refinery from further attacks, Russian forces have positioned several Pantsir short-range air defense missile and gun systems around the facility. According to videos published online, three such systems of different modifications were placed within a 300-meter radius of each other.

The systems were deployed on the highest available points — overpasses of the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) exits, less than one kilometer from the plant. In total, at least four Pantsir systems are now deployed in close proximity to the refinery.

It is also possible that additional units are stationed nearby but have not yet appeared in video footage.

The redeployment of air defense systems to the Moscow refinery indicates that Russian command has pulled these systems from other sectors. This significantly weakens the protection of other critical Russian facilities and may increase the effectiveness of future Ukrainian strikes.

What is known about the Pantsir system

The Pantsir system was developed to protect important military and strategic facilities from aerial threats. In recent years, such systems have increasingly been placed on rooftops in Moscow to defend key infrastructure sites.

The system is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.

One of its main features is the combination of missile and artillery weapons on a single platform. Guided missiles are used to engage targets at longer ranges, while automatic cannons are used at close range, including against low-flying drones.

In addition to engaging aerial targets, the system can also target lightly armored vehicles and enemy personnel.

On the night of June 18 and in the morning, drones attacked Moscow. One of the main targets was the Moscow refinery in Kapotnya.

Later, the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff confirmed that the drones completely halted operations at the Moscow refinery. The plant suspended oil refining indefinitely due to critical damage to four large storage tanks and processing units.
