On the night of January 2, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Zaporizhzhia with strike drones. Dozens of buildings were damaged, and a shopping center caught fire, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

"During the New Year holidays, Russia did not stop attacking Zaporizhzhia and its suburbs. Last night, one of the most massive drone attacks took place," Fedorov says.

According to him, a significant part of the Russian targets were destroyed by Ukrainian air defense forces while still approaching the city. This avoided casualties among the residents.

At the same time, the Russians hit Zaporizhzhia with drones 9 times. Residential buildings, commercial facilities, and infrastructure were hit.

As of this morning, dozens of damaged houses and commercial premises have been recorded.

"Russia tried to strike the energy infrastructure again last night, but as of this morning, all residents in the region have electricity,” the head of the Regional Military Administration adds.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine specifies that Russian troops attacked Zaporizhzhia twice with strike drones during the night.

The first wave occurred late in the evening on January 1. Three fires broke out: a non-residential annex to a high-rise building, and two farm buildings caught fire. Debris damaged residential buildings, road surfaces, and cars.

The second Russian attack occurred at approximately 2 a.m. Kyiv time on January 2, causing a fire in a shopping center. Rescuers quickly extinguished the fire, and State Emergency Service of Ukraine sappers surveyed the area for dangerous drone debris. There were no casualties.

Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia

On December 31, an air raid alert lasted more than four hours in the Zaporizhzhia region. During the prolonged alert, explosions were heard in Zaporizhzhia itself.

Later, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov, clarified that the Russian strike had caused several fires and that an industrial infrastructure facility had been hit.

In addition, in the evening of the same day, shortly before New Year's Eve, the Russians attacked the city again, damaging a high-rise building and setting cars on fire.
