Despite Ukrainian forces raising the blue-and-yellow flag on the Kinburn Spit in the Mykolaiv region, Russian troops have not withdrawn from the area, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said in a comment to Suspilne.

According to him, the territory remains strategically important for Russian forces.

"We are currently observing the process of destroying Russian logistics. This is a consistent process that has been ongoing for more than a year, not just months. But as of now, the Kinburn Spit is an active combat zone," Pletenchuk said.

Occupation of the Kinburn Spit

The Kinburn Spit has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. Russian forces entered the peninsula from the Kherson region, allowing them to establish control over a significant part of the Black Sea waters.

The spit is of strategic importance due to its location near the exits from the ports of Kherson and Mykolaiv. Its capture effectively allowed Russia to block shipping from these ports.

In addition, Russian forces on the Kinburn Spit regularly attack the city of Ochakiv and nearby areas.

Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces South released a video showing the blue-and-yellow flag on the Kinburn Spit.

The military stated that, as a result of fire strikes by Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces, Russian troops had retreated from their positions. They also added that the enemy is evacuating surviving personnel and abandoning defensive lines.
