Rubio outlines key elements for Ukraine-Russia peace deal

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia should be based on facts, actions, and real security guarantees, not on trust.
"Well, I don't think peace deals are built on trust. I think peace deals have to be built on verification, facts, action, and realities. So this is not an issue of, well, of trust. It's an issue of building in these sorts of things, verification, security guarantees, things that have been discussed in the past," Rubio said.
He added that these are the very issues currently being discussed.
"But right now, it's not the time. If we're trying to bring two sides together, the last thing you want to do is give one of the two sides an excuse to walk away from this effort. We're just trying to achieve peace," the Secretary of State said.
He emphasized that the US is trying to end the war, which has cost them and their allies a lot of money and many lives.
"We just want all this to stop. And we're trying to find whether we can play a role in making that happen," Rubio explained.
The Secretary of State noted that everyone should hope that US President Donald Trump will be able to end this war because, at this point, it really benefits no one.
"It may not work out. Peace deals are hard. But we are trying, and I think the President deserves credit for spending this much time and this much energy and these many resources to try to bring about this outcome of peace," he concluded.
Peace plan for Ukraine
Recently, Reuters published a detailed description of Donald Trump's plan to resolve the war in Ukraine. Shortly after, Reuters released a peace plan involving Ukraine and Europe.
However, the US President criticized a journalist from The New York Times for publishing an article stating that Ukraine should regain its territories, including Crimea.
According to Trump, the journalist complied with the editor's request by writing an article containing demands for Ukrainian territories.
