Romania to increase ammunition purchases amid Russia's war against Ukraine
Romania will accelerate and increase purchases of ammunition in response to Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, reports Euractiv.
The relevant decision was made on Thursday by the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) under the chairmanship of President Klaus Johannis.
The Council emphasized that Russia's aggressive stance has led to changes in regional security that require a reassessment, reprioritization, and reconfiguration of military procurement programs.
The changes are aimed at strengthening Romania's defense capabilities to counter new threats, including an increase in the volume of ammunition purchases and a gradual build-up of strategic reserves.
The Council members also discussed the material support plan for the Romanian army for 2025-2034. In particular, they identified the need for Romania to develop its domestic industrial potential for the production of modern military equipment to protect state interests and ensure the security of the supply chain.
The meeting also reviewed the latest developments in Russian aggression, in particular the recent escalation, which was called an “egregious violation of international law.”
“Their impact on regional security in the Black Sea was assessed, with significant implications for both Europe and the Euro-Atlantic area. Additional deterrence and countermeasures were discussed for implementation at the national level and with support from NATO allies,” the Council said in a statement.
Russian drones on the territory of Romania
During Russia's attack on Ukraine, on the night of September 7-8, Russian attack drones violated Romanian airspace.
This was not the first time that Russian drones had entered the country's territory. On several occasions, drone wreckage was found in Romania.
Romania insists that NATO should take “decisive and coordinated” measures in response to incidents in which Russian missiles or drones fired at Ukraine intrude into the Alliance's airspace.
