Romania's Constitutional Court annuls first-round election results
Romania’s Constitutional Court has annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. This means that the entire electoral process will be restarted in full, according to News.ro.
The judges made this decision after an urgent meeting to review requests for canceling the first round.
The requests referenced declassified documents alleging that the campaign of the pro-Russian candidate, Călin Georgescu, was the result of orchestrated manipulation from outside Romania.
It is noted that a new date and timeline will be set for the repeat election.
Romania’s presidential election
The first round of Romania’s presidential election took place on November 24. According to official results, Călin Georgescu came in first, followed by Elena Lasconi in second place.
Georgescu is a pro-Russian far-right politician who has described Russia’s war against Ukraine as a conspiracy by American weapons manufacturers.
In contrast, Lasconi opposes territorial concessions by Ukraine and is a pro-Western politician.
On December 2, the Constitutional Court of Romania accepted the results of the first round of the presidential election. The second round was to be held this week.
