Response to Russian threat: Germany deploying armored brigade in Lithuania

Germany has officially activated its first permanent foreign military unit since World War II. This concerns a 5,000-strong armored brigade in Lithuania, Politico reports.
The 45th Armored Brigade was officially activated during a ceremony near Vilnius. A temporary headquarters was set up, the brigade's emblem was unveiled, and the unit was officially placed under the command of Brigadier General Christoph Huber.
"We have a clear mission: to ensure the protection, freedom and security of our Lithuanian allies on NATO’s eastern flank. In doing so, we also protect NATO territory — and Germany itself," emphasized Huber.
The deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania was announced back in 2023. At that time, Germany effectively broke its principle of not permanently stationing combat troops abroad.
The unit is expected to be fully operational by 2027 and will eventually be based in a new military complex in Rūdninkai, approximately 30 kilometers south of Vilnius. Until then, the troops will be stationed at temporary Lithuanian bases.
The brigade will include not only frontline troops but also support units, including a medical center, a communications platoon, and command support groups.
Currently, 150 German soldiers are stationed in Lithuania. By the end of the year, their number may increase to 500.
Russia's threat to NATO
Earlier, German intelligence reported in its briefing that Russia is likely preparing for war against NATO countries.
According to intelligence, the aggressor country could be ready for war with the Alliance by 2030. There is also a possibility that Moscow might "test NATO" with a small-scale military operation. Among the countries at risk are, in particular, the Baltic states.
