Russia's Vladimir Putin has cynically threatened Ukraine with attacks on energy facilities. The Kremlin leader calls these attacks retaliatory.

"Moscow has long endured and not responded to Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure. Now it has begun to respond seriously," Putin said at a meeting with Fico.

Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities

This statement is a blatant distortion of reality. It was Russia that began systematically striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure in the fall of 2022, trying to plunge Ukrainians into the cold. A number of energy facilities were significantly damaged or destroyed.

Ukraine, on the other hand, has a single goal in its strikes on oil and gas facilities and military factories: to deprive the aggressor of the resources to finance the war.

After all, the Russian energy sector is one of the key sources of revenue for the Russian budget, which the Kremlin uses to maintain its army and continue the war against Ukraine.

The Russians have not stopped and continue to attack Ukraine's energy sector. In particular, a significant part of the population in the Odesa region was recently left without electricity.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that there would be a response to the Russian attacks.

One of the most significant responses was the attacks on the Russian oil refining industry.

Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory have repeatedly led to fires, explosions, and temporary stoppages of pumping through the Russian Druzhba oil pipeline.
