Russia has sent its special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, to the United States for official talks. This happened just a few days after US President Donald Trump imposed tough anti-Russian sanctions, CNN and an Axios journalist reported.
CNN sources reported that Dmitriev is expected to meet with members of the Trump administration "to continue discussions about the US–Russia relationship."
The visit takes place amid growing frustration in the United States following the Kremlin's refusal to end the war in Ukraine and Trump's cancellation of the planned summit with the Russian president.
Barak Ravid, a journalist with Axios, reported that during his visit to the United States, Kirill Dmitriev will meet with President Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Trump–Putin meeting
Last week, the US president announced a possible meeting with the Russian president in Hungary in an attempt to end the war in Ukraine.
Following this, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the aggressor state was refusing a ceasefire.
In response, on Wednesday, October 22, Donald Trump imposed sanctions on two of Russia's largest oil companies.
The US Department of the Treasury reported that the new sanctions against Russia were introduced to push Putin toward serious negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
In addition, the US president canceled the anticipated meeting with Putin. He emphasized that he would not hold talks with him, as he was convinced he could not achieve the desired result.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has already called the US sanctions and the cancellation of the summit with Putin an "act of war" against Russia.
Putin also stated that the meeting with Donald Trump in Budapest would not take place, allegedly due to insufficient preparation.
At the same time, the White House does not rule out a possible meeting between the American leader and the Russian president, but only if it yields a tangible positive result.
