Poland targeted in drone attack, EU ramps up sanctions on Russia

The European Union condemned the deliberate violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones and promised to step up support for Ukraine, states EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
The EU diplomat described the aggressive and reckless act as part of a serious escalation by Russia, posing a threat to the safety of EU citizens, regional stability, and international peace.
She emphasized that this serious breach of European airspace only strengthens our resolve to support Ukraine and its people in defending themselves against Russia, as well as in their pursuit of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.
“We will raise the cost for Moscow further by ramping up sanctions significantly on Russia and its enablers. We will also work with our international partners to put pressure on Russia to end this war,” Kallas stated.
She added that the EU expresses full solidarity with the Republic of Poland, continues to provide necessary support for protecting its eastern border, and remains in constant close contact with the Polish authorities.
Russian drone strike on Poland
On the night of September 10, Russian forces launched around 20 strike drones into Polish territory, entering via Ukraine and Belarus. Polish air defenses intercepted only 4 of them.
Additionally, fragments of an unknown missile and seven Russian drones, reportedly Gerbera models, were found in Poland.
Russia claimed that the drone incursions into Poland were not planned and did not explain how the unmanned vehicles entered Polish airspace.
Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry warned of a risk of escalation that could provoke armed conflict between NATO countries and Russia.
