Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reacted sharply to presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki's promise to block Ukraine's accession to NATO. He called such rhetoric treason, reports TVN24.

The Polish Prime Minister called Nawrocki's statement “one of the biggest scandals” of the election campaign.

“As you remember, there were few cases when we managed to reach a full consensus, full solidarity between the late President Lech Kaczyński and me when I was prime minister. It was rather a conflict and political confrontation. But there was full agreement on the issue of Ukraine, its sovereignty, its pro-Western position, and its membership in NATO,” Tusk said.

He emphasized that “the last thing Poland should do is fulfill or support Putin's demands.”

“A Polish presidential candidate who, in order to please Mr. Mentzen in one broadcast, says that Poland will never agree to Ukraine's membership in NATO, there is no better term for this than treason,” Tusk said.

Nawrocki's scandalous statement

The first round of the presidential election took place in Poland on May 18. Civic Platform candidate and Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and Law and Justice candidate Karol Nawrocki made it to the second round.

The leader of the anti-Ukrainian Confederation Liberty and Independence, Sławomir Mentzen, took third place. He promised political support to the candidate in exchange for promoting his demands. These include the refusal to send Polish troops to Ukraine and blocking Ukraine's accession to NATO.

Karol Nawrocki has agreed to these demands. He stated that he was ready to sign Mentzen's proposals.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called Nawrocki's position "deadly dangerous" for Poland.
