Any step that brings Ukraine and Poland closer to resolving their historical disputes is important, while division between the two countries serves only the interests of the Russian Federation, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated.
Dialogue expectations
The Polish defense minister stressed that any declaration aimed at resolving difficult issues in relations between Kyiv and Warsaw deserves serious attention.
"I hope that the announcements by (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – ed.) regarding the opening of archives, exhumations, and dialogue will turn into concrete actions. This is the direction we have been advocating for," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
He added that Poland has consistently emphasized the importance of dialogue and honoring the memory of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy.
Shared threat to both nations
Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed that despite historical disagreements, the two countries now face a much greater challenge.
"Today, Poland and Ukraine have a common enemy—Russia. That is where the threat to our order lies. Sowing discord between our nations serves the interests of the Kremlin," the minister concluded.
Ukraine–Poland dialogue
Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced five resolutions aimed at improving relations with Poland. He stressed that European countries need good-neighborly, mutually beneficial relations built on mutual respect.
The proposals have already received a response from Warsaw. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk welcomed Zelenskyy's steps toward strengthening dialogue.
Note that the initiatives include expanding bilateral engagement and opening archives related to the tragic events in Volhynia.
