Opposition leader attacked in South Korea, stabbed in the neck
The leader of the opposition Democratic Party of South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck during a visit to the southern port city of Busan, reports Yonhap.
The media claims that Lee was attacked by an unknown person while inspecting the construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island in Busan.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, posing as a supporter, approached the politician asking for an autograph and then attacked him with an unidentified weapon about 20-30 centimeters long, probably a knife.
The attacker looked like a man of 50-60 years old. He was quickly subdued by law enforcement officers and detained at the scene.
The politician was transferred to Busan National University Hospital about 20 minutes after the attack.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed deep concern for Lee Jae-myung's safety and ordered the police and relevant authorities to quickly establish the facts and make every effort to promptly transport the victim to the hospital and provide him with treatment.
Yoon also emphasized that such violence should never be tolerated under any circumstances.
South Korea's sanctions against Russia and Belarus
South Korea regularly assists Ukraine to ensure the demining of our country's territories after the Russian intervention. In addition, Eastern partners send humanitarian aid packages.
Seoul significantly expanded its sanctions against Minsk and Moscow in April 2023, when the list grew from 57 to 798 items, adding industrial and construction equipment, steel and chemical products, and car parts worth more than $50,000.
On December 26, the South Korean government decided to tighten export controls on Russia and Belarus. As part of the sanctions, Seoul has significantly expanded the list of goods by hundreds of items subject to restrictions.
