South Korea expands export ban with nearly 700 items from Russia, Belarus
The government of South Korea has decided to strengthen export controls on Russia and Belarus. As part of the sanctions, Seoul significantly expanded the list of restricted goods by hundreds of items, writes Yonhap.
Reportedly, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy of South Korea added 682 more items to the list of goods that are prohibited for export to Russia and Belarus. This includes heavy construction equipment, rechargeable batteries, aircraft components, and machinery.
It is noted that the new regulation will increase the total number of items on the sanctions list to 1,159.
This decision is expected to take effect at the beginning of 2024 after the necessary administrative procedures are completed, and the South Korean government publishes guidelines for exporters.
At the same time, the South Korean authorities have stated that they will conduct an individual analysis of "exceptional cases" of deliveries.
South Korea's sanctions against Russia and Belarus
It is worth noting that Seoul significantly expanded sanctions against Minsk and Moscow in April 2023 - at that time, the list increased from 57 to 798 items, including industrial and construction equipment, products from the steel and chemical industries, as well as car parts costing more than $50,000.
It is important to mention that South Korea regularly provides assistance to Ukraine for demining territories due to Russian intervention. In addition, the Eastern partners send humanitarian aid packages.
