Only Ukraine has the right to determine the terms of a just peace with Russia, and the final decision regarding any agreement must belong to Kyiv.

This was stated by Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand, according to Ukrinform.

Thus, the Canadian Foreign Minister responded to a question about whether she would support peace in Ukraine if it came at the cost of the country’s territorial integrity.

"Canada supports Ukraine and its territorial integrity, but the final decision regarding Ukraine rests solely with Ukraine, including decisions related to its territorial integrity," Anand said.

The minister added that she had spoken with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha about the progress of peace negotiations. She stated that Canada aims to support Ukraine and the decisions it makes in the areas of the rule of law, peace, security, and territorial integrity.

"It is necessary to continuously pay attention to how these decisions impact Europe and the rest of the world," she noted.

Anand remarked that this issue would be actively discussed next week during the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

Canada and US peace plan

As previously reported, Canada recently decided to strengthen its defense sector and modernize its armed forces. Over the next five years, the country will allocate about 82 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 58 billion US dollars) to reinforce its military.

Regarding Russia, on 12 November, Canada announced new sanctions. The restrictions targeted 100 tankers of the "shadow fleet" and companies supporting Russia’s cyber infrastructure.

Peace talks between representatives of Europe, the US, and Ukraine regarding the plan proposed by Washington took place in Geneva in recent days.

Reportedly, the number of points was reduced from 28 to 19. The media also indicated that the new version removed cuts to the Ukrainian army and territorial concessions to the aggressor. Additionally, the revised plan will exclude a provision on amnesty for crimes committed during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Next, a meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and the US, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, is expected at the end of November.
