Canada has announced new sanctions against Russia. The measures target 100 tankers from Russia’s shadow fleet as well as companies supporting Russian cyber infrastructure, according to Canada's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry noted that Canada's new actions further increase the economic costs for Russia over its unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, as they target its energy revenues and financial resources while degrading its conventional and hybrid military capabilities.

The sanctions cover 100 vessels from Russiaэs shadow fleet, as well as 13 individuals and 11 organizations, including several involved in developing and deploying Russia's drone program.

The ministry emphasized that Canada remains a leader in countering military technologies that Russia relies on to gain an advantage on the battlefield against Ukraine.

For the first time, Canada has also imposed sanctions on organizations supplying cyber infrastructure used in Russia's hybrid strategies against Ukraine.

Several Russian companies engaged in liquefied natural gas were also sanctioned, as Russia continues to rely on energy revenues to finance its aggressive war against Ukraine.

"The measures are a direct response to Ukraine’s priorities and support ongoing efforts by the G7 to ramp up economic pressure on Russia to end its war and are in broad alignment with sanctions recently announced by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom," the ministry noted.

Canada's sanctions against Russia

In June, Canada announced a new sanctions package targeting Russian citizens, companies, and vessels that help the Kremlin circumvent oil restrictions.

The measures primarily affected individuals close to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Canada also imposed restrictions on ships that assist Russia in bypassing the oil embargo. This includes the so-called shadow fleet, which transports energy resources at artificially inflated prices.
