Nuclear safety in Ukraine remains extremely unstable after Russian strikes by the Russian Federation, according to the IAEA.

"Nuclear safety and security in Ukraine remains extremely precarious during the military conflict. Two operating NPPs - Khmelnitskyy and Rivne - had to reduce electricity output after overnight attack on electrical substation critical for nuclear safety," the IAEA stated.

Director General Rafael Grossi once again emphasized the need for restraint to maintain nuclear safety and avoid an accident with serious radiological consequences.

Russian attacks and power outages

During the night of November 8, Russian forces carried out another massive strike on Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas. As a result of the attack, large-scale emergency power outages were introduced in many regions of the country.

Due to the aftermath of the attack, all thermal power plants of the Centrenergo company were shut down, including the Trypilska TPP in Kyiv region and the Zmiivska TPP in Kharkiv region.

This led to a temporary suspension of electricity production at these major facilities.

As of the evening of November 8, energy workers managed to stabilize the situation, but it is still impossible to completely avoid outages. Full restoration of electricity supply will depend on the condition of the damaged infrastructure and the ongoing repair efforts.
