On the night of November 8, Russia carried out a massive attack on Ukraine, striking energy infrastructure and residential areas. As a result, emergency power outages were introduced in several regions of the country.

Everything known about the consequences of the enemy’s combined attack is detailed below by RBC-Ukraine.

Key questions:

  • Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

  • Kalibr, Kinzhal missiles, and numerous drones were used.

  • Main targets: energy facilities.

  • Scheduled and emergency power outages were introduced across several regions.

  • Thermal power plant equipment was seriously damaged; repair work is underway.

  • Kremenchuk and Horishni Plavni are completely without electricity.

That night, Russian forces attacked Ukraine using strike drones as well as Kalibr cruise missiles and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.

Nationwide air raid alerts were declared several times due to the takeoff of multiple military aircraft. According to monitoring channels, up to seven MiG jets could have been in the air during the first alert.

Regional media reported explosions in Dnipro, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia.

In Kyiv, sounds of explosions were also heard; however, it was likely the so-called Mach cone — the sonic boom produced by a Kinzhal hypersonic missile.

Energy

Around 1 a.m., local time, energy companies began reporting emergency power outages in Kyiv, as well as in the Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad regions.

Emergency shutdowns were also introduced in the Sumy region. Kharkivoblenergo explained that this was done "to prevent overloading of the power system due to shelling."

Later, the Ministry of Energy reported that the enemy was conducting a massive attack on the energy infrastructure, which was the reason for blackouts across several regions.

"Emergency outages will be canceled once the situation in the power system stabilizes," the ministry stated.

Dnipro and the region

According to the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration (RMA), one of the drones hit an apartment building that caught fire and caused severe damage to several apartments.

According to the latest data, one woman was killed, and ten people were injured in the strike. Several of the injured, including one child, were hospitalized.

The strike damaged apartments on the fourth to the sixth floors of the building. During rescue operations, 28 residents were evacuated, including five children.

It was also reported that two people remain unaccounted for after the Russian strike on the residential building in Dnipro.

The Dnipropetrovsk RMA reported that Russian forces also struck other parts of the region. In the Samarsky district, a private house caught fire after the air attack; in Pavlohrad, a commercial facility was damaged; and in the Synelnykove district, infrastructure suffered damage.

Kharkiv region

Russian forces attacked the suburbs of Kharkiv overnight. As a result of the shelling, the city experienced power and water supply interruptions, and the metro stopped operating.

Due to low voltage, certain districts already face — and others may soon face — temporary water supply disruptions. However, utility services are working to restore service as quickly as possible.

Odesa region

Russian forces struck the Odesa region using attack drones, the State Emergency Service (SES) reported. As a result of the attack, an energy infrastructure facility caught fire. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties or fatalities.

Poltava region

As a result of another Russian strike on the region’s energy infrastructure, the entire city of Kremenchuk was left without electricity.

Mayor Vitalii Maletskyi said that local authorities are taking all necessary measures to ensure the operation of water supply, sewage, and heating systems, as well as deploying points of invincibility for residents.

Horishni Plavni were also left without power after energy infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Head of the Poltava RMA Volodymyr Kohut added that the enemy carried out a massive strike targeting the region’s energy facilities.

Due to the attack, emergency blackout schedules were introduced.

Kyiv region

At night, Russian forces also attacked the Kyiv region using drones and missiles.

According to Kyiv RMA head Mykola Kalashnyk, civilian settlements and energy facilities were hit, resulting in fires and destruction.

In the Vyshhorod district, a woman sustained shrapnel wounds to the thigh and was hospitalized.

In Boryspil and Vyshhorod districts, private houses and cars were damaged.

Kalashnyk emphasized that the enemy is deliberately targeting critical infrastructure in an attempt to leave the region without light and heat and to intimidate the population.

As of now, scheduled power outages have resumed in Kyiv.

It is also worth noting that the enemy’s attack on the Poltava region caused significant damage to the railway infrastructure, resulting in substantial delays for several long-distance and suburban trains.
