China has successfully placed a new experimental satellite into its designated orbit. It will be used to test technologies enabling direct broadband communication between mobile phones and space, according to CCTV News.

Space mission details

The media reports that the successful launch occurred on May 31, 2026, at 02:07 Beijing time from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center.

The spacecraft was carried into orbit by the Chang Zheng 2D carrier rocket. This mission marked the 646th flight for rockets in this series.

What will be tested in space

The main goal of the launch is to experimentally verify next-generation satellite internet technology.

The new satellite will help test direct broadband connectivity with standard mobile phones and develop integration between space-based and ground communication networks.

China expands its orbit footprint

Earlier, China sent three astronauts to its Tiangong space station aboard the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft. One member of the crew will remain in orbit for a full year, setting a record for China's space program as it moves toward its planned Moon landing in 2030.

China's increased activity comes amid a broader shift in global competition among leading powers into the exosphere. The war in Ukraine has significantly reshaped global perceptions of space, pushing both the United States and China to accelerate their orbital programs and prepare infrastructure for potential security threats.

In addition, Beijing is actively studying long-term human survival beyond Earth. Previously, a human artificial embryo created from stem cells was sent to the Tiangong station to study the effects of microgravity and the space environment on early tissue development.
