Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU
On December 14, during the summit, EU leaders approved the opening of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the bloc. This happened against the backdrop of concerns that Hungary would veto the decision.
The EU leaders' negotiations lasted over three hours, and the summit's start was delayed due to Budapest's position. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban left the room at the time of the vote, so the decision was unanimously adopted.
For Ukraine to join the European Union, an assessment of Ukrainian legislation's compliance with EU legislation must occur.
On January 17, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced the start of the screening of Ukrainian legislation.
Earlier, Olga Stefanishyna stated that this procedure could take up to a year.
