NATO finally agrees to declare Ukraine on 'irreversible path' to membership - Media
NATO countries have acknowledged that Ukraine is on an “irreversible path” towards membership in the Alliance. This formulation has been included in the final draft of the joint statement of the Washington summit, The Guardian reports.
According to The Guardian, citing anonymous AFP sources, in the final declaration of the NATO summit, countries will agree to support Ukraine on "its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including Nato membership."
The agency noted that the declaration will also reiterate previous formulations stating that Ukraine will receive an official invitation to membership "when allies agree and conditions are met."
NATO summit
During the NATO summit this week in Washington, membership for Ukraine in the Alliance is one of the key issues.
According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine understands that it will not receive an invitation to join NATO during the summit, but hopes to see "something akin to invitation."
Meanwhile, Polish President Andrzej Duda hopes that Ukraine will receive an invitation to NATO at the next summit.
At the same time, according to Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Douglas Jones, during the North Atlantic Alliance summit, Ukraine will be offered "concrete pathways" to accelerate its future NATO membership.
