NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is confident in U.S. President Donald Trump's ability to negotiate peace in Ukraine, CNN reports.

Rutte stated that he has "every trust" in Trump regarding a lasting peace agreement in Ukraine. The NATO chief made this remark in an interview with CNN ahead of Trump's planned talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rutte also called it "great" that Ukrainian and US representatives agreed last week in Saudi Arabia on a ceasefire proposal.

Additionally, the NATO leader emphasized that he does not believe Trump places too much trust in Putin.

"He knows President Putin very well from his first term. So he knows how he has to make sure that he can get a deal done. I have full trust in that," Rutte stated.

Trump-Putin talks

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump announced that he plans to hold negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18. He also outlined the key topics of their upcoming conversation, including territorial issues and power plants.

Later, Trump clarified that the talks with Putin will take place on the morning of March 18, Washington time.

The discussion is expected to cover a potential 30-day ceasefire and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Recently, Ukrainian and US delegations met in Saudi Arabia, where the US proposed a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire with Russia.

Ukraine has agreed to the proposal, while Russia has not yet given a straight answer as to whether it is ready for such a truce. The Kremlin leader has mentioned certain conditions under which such a ceasefire could happen.

However, on March 17, speaking to reporters, Trump stated that Russia would agree to a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.
