During the first half of the year, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) achieved significant success in targeting and destroying Russian air defense systems. While the details of these special operations remain classified, their impact is already being felt, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On August 6, Zelenskyy received a briefing from the head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk.

He said the meeting focused primarily on:

  • military components,

  • special operations,

  • and long-range actions by SBU operatives.

"I’m grateful for the precision. We won't disclose the details publicly, but the enemy is already feeling the consequences of our actions," Zelenskyy added.

The president highlighted the SBU's successes in eliminating Russian air defense systems in the first half of the year as particularly noteworthy.

"This significantly boosts our long-range strikes on targets within Russia’s military machine and war economy. I’ve approved several new operations. Thank you to the SBU for your strength!" he said.

SBU operations

On June 1, the SBU carried out a unique operation targeting Russia’s strategic bombers.

The operation was personally led by SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk on the orders of President Zelenskyy.

SBU drones struck four military air bases: Olenya, Ivanovo, Dyagilevo, and Belaya. According to Malyuk, the drone strikes damaged more than 40 aircraft from Russia's strategic aviation fleet.

It was later revealed that the attack affected about 34% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers based at its main airfields. The SBU also calculated Russia's total losses from just that single day of Ukrainian special operations.

Additionally, it was recently reported that Ukraine's drone forces targeted the fuel and refueling facility at Sochi Airport.

The strike triggered a large-scale fire at the site.
