The football world has been shaken by the news of the death of one of the most successful coaches in history — Mircea Lucescu. "Mister," as players and fans respectfully called him, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that cannot be overstated.

RBC-Ukraine recalls the key achievements of the Romanian specialist, his historic UEFA Cup triumph, the development of world-class Brazilian stars, and the high-profile decisions that forever changed the landscape of Ukrainian sport.

What is known about Lucescu’s death

Amid a deterioration in his condition, reports of the death of the 80-year-old Romanian specialist first emerged on April 6, 2026. Several local media outlets reported this, citing sources in the football federation and his close circle.

However, his death was officially confirmed on Tuesday, April 7, at 8:30 p.m. local time, as reported by the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital.

The cause of death was complications from a long-term heart condition that Lucescu had been battling in recent years. The legendary coach’s health worsened a few days earlier. In his final days, "Mister" was in Bucharest, where he was undergoing intensive care treatment.

As reported, Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after losing consciousness during a Romania national team training session. At the hospital, he was fitted with a defibrillator.

He had been expected to be discharged on Friday, April 3, but suffered a heart attack. In his final days, his arrhythmia worsened and did not respond to treatment.

The coach was moved to intensive care, where he remained in a coma and was connected to life-support machines.

Mircea Lucescu’s biography: Key milestones

Playing career: Lucescu became a true icon of Romanian football back in his playing days. Operating as a forward, he won seven national championship titles with Dinamo Bucharest. The peak of his playing career came at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, where Mircea captained the Romania national team, including in matches against Pelé and the legendary Brazil side. In total, he made 70 appearances for the national team and scored 9 goals.

Early steps in coaching: His genius revealed itself early: at just 36 years old (in 1981), he took charge of the Romania national team, which he led to Euro 1984.

Success in Italy and Türkiye: In addition to his own national team, the specialist also managed the Türkiye national team (2017–2019). However, the bulk of his career was spent working with clubs.

In his home country, Lucescu coached Corvinul, as well as Bucharest’s Dinamo and Rapid. In Italy, he managed Pisa, Brescia, Reggiana, and Inter. In Türkiye, he was in charge of Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. With Dinamo Bucharest and Rapid, he became Romanian champion, while with Beşiktaş and Galatasaray, he won the Turkish league. With the latter, he also claimed the UEFA Super Cup in 2000.

The Shakhtar era (2004–2016): The most successful period of his coaching career. Over 12 years, he transformed the Donetsk club into a European powerhouse. Under his leadership, Shakhtar won 22 trophies. The crown jewel was the 2009 UEFA Cup — the last European triumph to date for Ukrainian clubs.

Period at Dynamo (2020–2023): His return to Ukraine after a long break came as a major surprise. Despite protests from part of the ultras, Lucescu won a domestic "double" (the league and the cup) in his very first season with Kyiv’s club, bringing the team back to the Champions League group stage.

A world record holder: Mircea Lucescu has forever inscribed his name in football history as one of the most remarkable record holders. He holds the status of the oldest coach in the history of the UEFA Champions League and national teams. With 35 trophies to his name, the Romanian specialist ranks third among the most decorated coaches of all time, behind only Sir Alex Ferguson (49 titles) and Pep Guardiola (40).

What Ukrainians remember Lucescu for

"Brazilian Shakhtar": Lucescu built a unique football model of "buy low, sell high." Thanks to his ability to develop talent, the world learned about stars such as Fernandinho, Willian, Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira, and others.

Character and charisma: He was impossible to imagine without emotion. His signature gesture of throwing his hat onto the snowy pitch during a match against Dynamo became a legendary meme. He constantly put pressure on referees and opponents through the media, engaging in "psychological games" long before they became mainstream.

A man of paradox: He became the only coach to be embraced by both poles of Ukrainian football. He was respected in Donetsk and, eventually, recognized in Kyiv for his professionalism.

Youth development: "Mister" gave dozens of Ukrainian football stars their start. From Andrii Pyatov and Yaroslav Rakitskyi to Illia Zabarnyi and Vitalii Mykolenko, whom he identified in Dynamo’s reserve squad and helped elevate to the level of the English Premier League.

What Lucescu said about Ukraine

Mircea Lucescu always called Ukraine his second homeland. After the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, he firmly refused to leave Kyiv immediately, staying with the team during the first and most difficult days.

"I worked here in Kyiv with Dynamo and witnessed firsthand all the horrors of the war brought by Russia. I did not leave the team, I trained players under air raid sirens and helped evacuate their families. I experienced all of this myself," the coach recalled.

He became a key advocate for the resumption of the Ukrainian championship despite attacks and air raid alerts. Lucescu believed that football is not just a game, but an emotional release that a nation in struggle needs.

His greatest unfulfilled dream was the return of top-level football to Donbas Arena. He always believed that one day he would step back onto the pitch of the stadium in Donetsk, which he called one of the most beautiful in the world.

Today, not only Romanian but also Ukrainian football has lost one of its legends. Thank you for everything, Mister.
