The military component of security guarantees for Ukraine is already largely in place. Next, partners will work on the political component, said Finnish President Alexander Stubb, according to Bloomberg.

According to him, work on security guarantees has been ongoing for several weeks since US President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Stubb noted that the main framework has already been formed.

"So the number one responsibility is Ukraine and the Ukrainian army, because they have the biggest, most capable, experienced, and modern army in the world right now. Second, it'll be supported by Europe. And third, there will be a backstop from the United States," he said.

The Finnish leader added that "the military construct" is already "pretty much ready," and the next work will begin on the political structure. At the same time, he noted that security guarantees will be implemented after the end of the war.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

Earlier, Stubb stated that security guarantees for Ukraine would mean obligations for EU countries that sign them to go to war with Russia in the event of renewed aggression.

The President of Finland also explained that to give the guarantees real strength, an American backstop is necessary. He also admitted that there is no full understanding yet of what commitments the Trump administration is ready to take on.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that only strong allies and robust defense can guarantee security. During his speech at the UN General Assembly debates, he emphasized that without weapons, international law does not fully function today.
