Merz makes powerful promise to Ukraine: 'You can count on me'

Germany will continue to support Ukraine, as this is a matter of the entire Europe’s security. Strengthening Ukraine’s military is the most important part of the work of the Coalition of the Willing and the Ramstein format, states German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, according to an RBC-Ukraine correspondent.
"You can count on me, on us, on Europe, on Germany. Germany will continue to provide financial support. We want to keep helping Ukraine in the negotiation processes to achieve a ceasefire and peace – these are two sides of the same coin," said the German Chancellor.
He added that together with the leaders of the UK, France, and the US, he will continue working on increasing Washington’s involvement in efforts to push Russia to sit at the negotiation table with Ukraine.
"The negotiation process must be aimed at achieving a permanent and unconditional ceasefire on land, sea, and in the sky. We will facilitate negotiations with Ukraine and the US. It is absolutely necessary that we maintain the involvement of the US and President Donald Trump in this," said Merz.
According to him, Ukraine is behaving very constructively, while Russia "is doing what it does," so allies must make efforts to push Russian dictator Vladimir Putin towards peace.
"Putin does not want us to strengthen Ukraine, but we will do so as long as the war continues. And that will be the right decision. We will do this until a ceasefire is achieved and further peace follows. We will work for Ukraine’s future and the security of Europe," emphasized the German Chancellor.
Russia wants to stop Western aid to Ukraine
It is important to note that, in response to the US proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, Moscow put forward its own demand. The Kremlin wants Ukraine to stop receiving military aid during a potential truce.
However, the leaders of France, the UK, Germany, Poland, and the US rejected the Kremlin’s demand and set a clear deadline for Russia. Moscow must agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine no later than Monday, May 12.
As reported by Reuters, the EU and the US will give Russia a final chance to agree to the ceasefire, and if they refuse, new sanctions will be imposed on Moscow.
