South Korea's opposition Democratic Party has called for President Yoon Suk Yeol's immediate resignation following his unexpected declaration of martial law, which was later overturned by the country’s parliament, reports Yonhap News Agency.

During an emergency session in the National Assembly, opposition lawmakers announced that they would immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol if he did not step down voluntarily.

"Yoon's declaration of martial law is a clear violation of the Constitution. He failed to comply with any of the requirements for declaring martial law. This is a serious act of rebellion and a perfect reason for impeachment," stated the Democratic Party of Korea's resolution.

Meanwhile, senior aides to Yoon, including his Chief of Staff, have resigned en masse following the controversial decision and its subsequent rejection by parliament.

Notable resignations include Chief of Staff Chung Jin-Suk, National Security Advisor Shin Won-Sik, Policy Chief Sung Tae-Yoon, and seven other senior officials.

Political crisis in South Korea

On December 3rd, President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea unexpectedly declared martial law in the country.

He cited the opposition, which he described as an anti-state force that was paralyzing the country's operations, as the reason for this decision.

The announcement led to clashes between law enforcement and military personnel outside the parliament building.

Just a few hours after the controversial declaration, the National Assembly of South Korea approved a resolution calling for the cancellation of martial law. Subsequently, the Cabinet of Ministers made a similar decision.

In the evening, Yoon Suk Yeol revoked the martial law in South Korea. The special regime lasted for more than six hours.
