On July 31, drones attacked a radio factory in Penza, Russia, which specializes in producing advanced communications systems for the Russian armed forces, according to Russian Telegram channels and the head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko.

What Russia says

Local Telegram channels claimed the target was JSC Radiozavod. Footage shared online showed black smoke allegedly visible from various parts of the city.

Videos showed a large fire raging at the site, with locals saying, "They're bombing the plant."

The regional governor confirmed the attack and the fire at one of the facilities, stating there were no casualties or structural damage.

The local administration also announced temporary restrictions on mobile internet, allegedly to aid anti-drone defense systems.

Response from Ukraine's CCD

The Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, confirmed that on July 31, a radio plant in Penza, one of the key enterprises of Russia's military-industrial complex, was attacked.

According to him, the plant specializes in producing advanced communications equipment for the Russian military, including:

  • Mobile command units;

  • Automated combat control systems;

  • Radios for Ground Forces, Airborne Troops, and Strategic Missile Forces;

  • Upgraded command and staff vehicles (CSVs) based on armored vehicles.

Kovalenko noted that the facility fulfills critical needs of the Russian army, and its damage could impact the military’s command and control systems.

Other attacks in Russia

Also on July 31, there was a loud drone strike in the town of Kotelnikovo in Russia’s Volgograd region. A fire broke out after the overnight UAV attack. Train service was suspended, and gas supplies were disrupted.

In recent weeks, drones have carried out a series of strikes targeting Russia’s logistics infrastructure. For example, on July 29, rail infrastructure in the town of Salsk in the Rostov region was attacked.
