Ukraine cannot be admitted to the European Union under a fast-track procedure, said the leader of the Tisza Party and winner of Hungary’s parliamentary elections, Péter Magyar, at a press conference.
"From the very beginning, we said we do not support Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU. It would be impossible for the EU to admit a country that is at war," he said.
According to Magyar, the issue of Ukraine’s membership is not currently relevant, as the country must go through all negotiating clusters.
"All candidate countries must go through the same process. They must discuss all clusters, and if Ukraine does so, Hungary will hold a referendum on whether the EU should admit it. That will not happen in the near future," he added.
Referendum in Hungary on Ukraine
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who lost in yesterday’s parliamentary elections, had already organized a referendum in the country on Ukraine’s EU membership.
He claimed that 95% of those who voted in the referendum were allegedly against Ukraine joining the European Union.
The referendum was accompanied by propaganda statements from members of the Hungarian government about the terrible consequences for Hungary if Ukraine were to become part of the EU.
Using these results as justification, Orbán’s government blocked the start of accession talks with Ukraine. In practice, negotiations have not actually begun, even though EU member state leaders approved the decision back in 2024.
