French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to initiate discussions on using France’s nuclear weapons to protect the entire European Union, according to Le Monde.

"Our nuclear deterrence forces protect us. They are French. Since 1964, they have always played a role in maintaining peace and security in Europe. I have decided to launch strategic discussions on the protection of the entire continent with our nuclear weapons. The final decision will rest with the heads of state and military commanders of European countries," Macron said.

He also emphasized the need to strengthen France’s defense capabilities amid the uncertain stance of the United States.

Earlier, we reported that France was open to deploying its nuclear weapons on the territory of its allies to replace the US nuclear presence in Europe.

There have also been reports that France may station its nuclear-armed fighter jets in Germany.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that denuclearization could become a key initiative for global security and suggested that China and Russia should also join the process.
