A key issue in the current talks in London between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of several partner countries is finding common ground, states French President Emmanuel Macron, according to France 24.
In particular, this concerns alignment between the positions of the US, Europe, and Ukraine regarding a potential peace agreement that could end Russian aggression.
According to Macron, it is now necessary to coordinate a unified approach among the allies.
"I think the main issue is the convergence between our common positions, Europeans and Ukrainians, and the US to finalise these peace negotiations," he said.
Macron also emphasized that once a coordinated position is reached, the parties will be able to move to a "new phase," in which they will seek to ensure "the best possible conditions for Ukraine, for the Europeans and for collective security."
US peace plan
The White House has not yet made the official content of the US peace plan to end Russia’s war against Ukraine public. At the same time, Western media reports that its initial version included 28 points.
According to unofficial information, the draft contained strict demands for Ukraine. In particular, it reportedly suggested that Kyiv "sacrifice" the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, effectively handing them over to Russia without fighting.
The plan also allegedly included a ban on Ukraine joining NATO — the country would have had to legally enshrine a neutral status.
After negotiations between Ukrainian and US representatives, the document was revised. Last week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that, following the dialogue, an updated list of 20 points was formed.
However, today the head of state emphasized that there is still no shared vision with the US regarding territorial issues.
It was also reported that the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, during a meeting with Zelenskyy in London, stressed the need for a "fair and lasting" peace.
Moreover, according to Bloomberg, European leaders are trying to persuade Zelenskyy not to agree to a possible deal on the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas without reliable security guarantees from the US.
