Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will take part in the G7 summit on Tuesday, June 16, to "restore consensus" on support for Ukraine, according to French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.
"This is very important for us because we need to restore consensus within the G7 on supporting Ukraine across different aspects of the war, including the need for negotiations," he said, hinting at disagreements between European leaders and US President Donald Trump on this issue.
The G7 summit will begin on Monday, June 15, in Evian in southeastern France. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on member states to place human rights at the center of their discussions.
In addition to the Ukrainian leader, the summit also invited leaders from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. The main focus of the meeting will be the war in the Middle East.
In particular, participants will discuss the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has a direct impact on the global economy due to rapidly rising fuel prices. Leaders will also focus on negotiations concerning Iran.
Heorhii Tykhyi said that Ukraine always supports meetings with the United States, but leaders’ schedules at the G7 summit in France are still being coordinated.
"As for contacts with the United States, it is probably too early to say, because leaders’ schedules are being coordinated, not only our leader’s but also those of other leaders. But we are always in favor of contacts with the American side," he said.
Tykhyi recalled that recently the Ukrainian President spoke with representatives of Trump. He also stressed that Kyiv is trying to produce significant positive developments "right around the time of the G7 summit."
"And of course, if there were an opportunity to organize a meeting between the presidents, we would support it. But it is probably still too early to say; we will see how the schedules are coordinated. I can confirm that the President has indeed been invited to Evian," the MFA spokesperson stated.
It is also noted that EU leaders plan to take the initiative and lead negotiations on ending the full-scale war, while in Berlin, they emphasize that all steps will be coordinated with Washington.
