Luxembourg will join the program for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine. The country is ready to allocate funds for this, said Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Euractiv reports.

He noted that Luxembourg has decided to join the PURL mechanism. Thus, the number of participants in the program under which American weapons are purchased for Ukraine will increase to nine.

Frieden emphasized that Luxembourg does not plan to cover the entire $500 million package for Ukraine on its own and intends to find partners. At the same time, the prime minister did not disclose the exact amount the country is ready to contribute.

"We will finance the package together with other countries which we still have to identify, a package of already available arms, to a large extend US arms, that we will provide to Ukraine," he added.

Belgium recently announced the allocation of €100 million, while Canada ($500 million), Germany ($500 million), and Lithuania ($30 million) already contributed to the PURL mechanism in August.

In addition, the Netherlands earlier in the summer promised to cover a full package worth $500 million, while Denmark, Norway, and Sweden announced their intention to jointly finance another tranche of the same amount.

Finland and the United Kingdom have also expressed interest in the initiative but have not yet announced the size of their possible contributions.

Weapons for Ukraine from the US

Earlier, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that his country is providing Ukraine with weapons capable of striking more distant targets on Russian territory.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that he expects European countries to allocate €1 billion per month for the purchase of American weapons under the PURL mechanism.
