London refrains from commenting on permission for Kyiv to strike Russia with Storm Shadow missiles
The UK government declares its full support for Ukraine. However, it refrains from commenting on the authorization to strike Russia with Storm Shadow missiles, reports Sky News.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson says that the UK is still steadfast in its support for Ukraine, but is not going to follow the United States in the arms supplies.
Joe Biden authorizes Ukraine to launch US-supplied missiles deep into Russia, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares to seek “further support” for Kyiv at the G20 summit.
“We remain steadfast in our support to the Ukrainian people almost a thousand days into this conflict... And going into the G20, the prime minister has set out very clearly that the Ukrainian people and President Zelenskyy have our full backing," Phillipson said.
She refrained from commenting on whether the UK might allow Ukraine to use British long-range weapons in Russia.
On a flight to Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that efforts to strengthen support for Ukraine should be "double down."
“We need to double down on shoring up our support for Ukraine and that's top of my agenda for the G20,” he said.
Earlier, Le Figaro reported that France and Britain had authorized Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with SCALP and Storm Shadow missiles. However, this report was later removed.
Axios reported that Biden allowed Ukraine to use long-range missiles only in the Kursk region of Russia.
