Lithuania restores Baltic Sea communication cable with Sweden

The Lithuanian unit of the Swedish telecommunications company Telia Lietuva has repaired the communication cable between Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea. The cable was damaged about two weeks ago, LRT reports.
According to company representatives, traffic through the Baltic Sea cable has been successfully restored. They noted that this channel accounted for nearly one-third of Lithuania's international internet traffic, but the public experienced no disruptions due to the damage.
"We have several internet connections in Lithuania with significant capacity reserves, so users can be confident that connectivity will remain stable even under the most challenging circumstances," said Telia's Chief Technical Officer Andrius Šemeškevičius.
What happened to the cables in the Baltic Sea
Two undersea telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea, including the C-Lion1 connecting Helsinki and Rostock, have been damaged. The causes of the incident are under investigation. However, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius suggested the damage might have been intentional.
Among the suspects is the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3, captained by a Russian national. The ship raised suspicions due to its unusual route and was intercepted for inspection by the Danish Navy.
The cable operator C-Lion1 has announced the start of repairs, which will take 5-15 days. The 1,173 km cable, operational since 2016, provides direct communication between Finland and Central Europe.
Additionally, damage was reported to a cable linking Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea.
