Former England striker Kevin Keegan has died at the age of 75. He was a star for Liverpool in the 1970s and later managed Manchester City and Newcastle, according to Sky Sports.
What is known about Kevin Keegan's death
The former footballer and manager had been battling cancer in recent years. In January, Keegan's family announced that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
The family has released a statement asking for privacy and thanking everyone for their messages of support.
"It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75. The former England player and manager had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. Kevin, a double Ballon d'Or winner, was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin's incredible medical team for all their support. This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy," the statement said.
What is Kevin Keegan famous for
During his career, Keegan made 750 professional appearances. He became a Liverpool legend after spending six years with the club from 1971 to 1977. He then moved to Germany to play for Hamburg, where he won back-to-back Ballon d'Or awards in 1978 and 1979.
As a player, Keegan won the European Cup in 1977 and lifted the UEFA Cup twice, in 1973 and 1976.
After retiring, Keegan enjoyed a successful managerial career. He managed Newcastle United (1992–1997), Fulham (1997–1999), the England national team (1999–2000), Manchester City (2001–2005), and returned to Newcastle United in 2008.
It is worth noting that in April, legendary Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, who managed Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv during his career in Ukraine, also passed away.
