A ceasefire between the United States and Iran has not stopped Democrats in Congress. More than 85 lawmakers continue to demand the impeachment of US President Donald Trump or his removal under the 25th Amendment, Axios.

Congresswomen Shri Thanedar and Jasmine Crockett sent letters to Vice President JD Vance and the Cabinet.

What is happening in Congress

On Tuesday morning, Congressman John Larson introduced articles of impeachment against Trump. Among the grounds cited were the president’s actions during the war with Iran.

Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari also announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his role in the war.

By Tuesday evening, more than 85 Democrats in the House of Representatives had joined calls for Trump’s impeachment or removal. Among them were Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

What sparked the backlash

Democratic outrage was triggered by Trump’s hardline policy toward Tehran. On Tuesday evening, Trump issued direct threats to destroy Iran if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened in time.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” the message said.

The statement angered not only Democrats but also some Republicans. Vance emphasized that they possessed tools they had not yet decided to employ.

Ceasefire changed nothing

On Tuesday evening, Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran — about an hour before the ultimatum deadline expired. But Democrats made it clear the deal does not settle the issue.

“Just because a President announces he’s agreed to a two-week ceasefire moments before he threatened to commit war crimes, does not mean he is suddenly fit to serve,” Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury wrote on X.

Senator Ed Markey also stood firm.

“I’m glad there is a reported ceasefire deal with Iran. But we shouldn’t be in this illegal war in the first place. And Donald Trump can’t simply threaten war crimes with impunity. Congress needs to get back in session now to stop this war and remove Donald Trump,” he said.

Are there chances of success

According to the outlet, there is currently no real chance of removing Trump — such a move would require Republican support, which is unlikely. Most progressives have already backed the calls, while moderate Democrats and those facing reelection in swing districts are more cautious.

However, former Republican congressman and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows sees this as a warning.

“If Republicans fail to retain the House, impeachment 3.0 will come,” he said.

What preceded this

As RBC-Ukraine previously reported, hours before the ultimatum expired, Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

During this period, the sides are expected to reach a final peace agreement.

Meanwhile, the first direct talks between the US and Iran are scheduled for Friday, April 10, in Pakistan.

According to media reports, the US delegation will be led by JD Vance.

At the same time, the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz remains unresolved: Iran insists on coordination with its military, while media report that Iran and Oman may charge fees for ship passage.
