Iran and Oman will be able to charge fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This permission is part of a two-week ceasefire reached with the US through intermediaries, according to the Associated Press.

"The two-week ceasefire plan includes allowing both Iran and Oman to charge fees on ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz," a regional source tells the agency.

According to the source, Iran will use the funds collected for reconstruction. However, it is not yet clear how Oman will spend the money.

The Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters of Oman and Iran. It was previously considered an international waterway and, before the US and Israeli military operation, never charged a toll for passage.

Background

Last night was the final deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz at the request of US President Donald Trump. Otherwise, he threatened to bomb bridges and power plants across the country.

As a result, the parties actively negotiated through intermediaries in the days leading up to the deadline, and ultimately, Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire in exchange for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has already publicly confirmed that it will open the strait.

However, there is a nuance regarding the ceasefire. The US, it appears, has already halted its attacks. However, Israel and Iran continue to strike each other. Many media outlets note that Washington and Tehran have not specified the starting point for when the ceasefire is to take effect.
