Lake Synevyr may look like a dream - But here's why you can't swim in it

Lake Synevyr is one of the most famous natural wonders of Ukraine, located in the very heart of the Carpathians. Every year, thousands of tourists come here to admire the incredible landscapes and feel the breath of wild nature. But despite the temptation to plunge into the crystal-clear water, swimming in Synevyr is strictly prohibited. Why is swimming in Lake Synevyr strictly forbidden for tourists?
Synevyr is part of the national park
Lake Synevyr is located within the territory of the Synevyr National Nature Park. It is a protected area with the status of a nature reserve.
According to park regulations, swimming, fishing, washing dishes, or using chemicals in the water are prohibited. Violating the rules is punishable by a fine.

Object of international importance
Synevyr is included in the Ramsar Convention list as a wetland of international importance.
This means the lake has exceptional ecological value, and any interference with its natural processes may negatively impact the biodiversity.
Dangerous temperature and depth
Even in the height of summer, the lake temperature does not exceed 13 degrees Celsius. Its depth reaches 22 meters.
This creates risks of hypothermia, cramps, and drowning. Underwater currents can form. According to locals, there have been cases where people disappeared in the water without a trace.

Ecosystem disruption
Trout, crayfish, and other species sensitive to pollution live in Synevyr. Body lotions, cleaning agents, or even simple human contact with the water can disrupt the ecological balance. Just a few types of swimwear materials can alter the chemical composition of the water.
Fines and liability
According to the law, swimming in Synevyr can result in a fine ranging from $13 to $41.
In case of damage to nature, the fine may be higher. Additionally, local environmental control services may require a written explanation and issue an administrative report.
